Features of Designs body boards

Designs can custom design a board "Taylor Made" to your specifications. The following options are available for you to create the ultimate bodyboard.

Core Materials

The materials we use in our boards comes in multiple forms, here are some brief explanations

FRC (Flex Response Core)

FRC CoreThe Flex Response Core (FRC) is a purpose built core for bodyboarders, which combines the best features of the traditional PE and PP cores. The result is a durable, lightweight, one-piece core with superior memory, flex, recoil and projection properties. You will be amazed!

The revolutionary FRC core has been combined with Turbo’s tri-stringer system. The three stringers are encased inside the core during its manufacture, custom built to Turbo’s specifications, providing the perfect structural flex in all conditions.

PE (Polyethylene)

PE corePE core close upPE cores have been used to make boards since the evolution of bodyboarding. Still a favourite of many top line pro riders. The core gives supple flex with excellent recoil.

PP (Polypropylene)

PP corePP core close upPP core have internal strength and magic memory. Virtually indestructible, super light and 100% water proof.

Tail Shapes

This is where you choose the tail shape that most suits your riding style and what type of waves you surf.

Bat Tail

Bat tailThe bat tail provides more surface area creating the board to lift at the tail providing less drag producing more speed, also giving the board a looser feel. Always good to have channels to stabilize and directional control. Great for surfing in smaller wave conditions.

Square Bat Tail

Square Bat tailThe square bat tail works very similar to the bat tail. By having a flat finish at the tail, the square bat tail produces more stability. It can be used with channels, also works great in small wave conditions.

Clipped Crescent Tail

Clipped crescent tailThe clipped crescent tail is one of the most versatile and functional tail shapes available, providing great control for all styles of riding in all wave conditions.

Full Crescent Tail

Full crescent tailThe full crescent tail works similar to the clipped crescent. Designed with narrower pegs creating excellent control and a better hold to the wave face. This tail is well suited to a Dropknee rider.

ALL TAILS ARE ONE PIECE ROLLED FROM THE DECK. TAIL PIECES ARE AVAILBLE ON REQUEST.

Board Features

Listed here are the features Designs bodyboards have to offer

Channels

Board ChannelsBoard ChannelsChannels are designed to provide better holding power and control in your turns. Channels will start 25cm up from the tail and taper out as they meet the tail at a depth of 5mm.

Hip Lock

Hip LocksTwo grooves similar to bottom channel shapes are crafted into the deck, one on either side near the tail providing better comfort and control of the board. Hip locks are suitable for all tail shapes.

Nose Bulbs

Nose BulbsNose BulbsNose bulbs are placed under the slick side of the board on both corners of the nose. They are used solely for better grip creating a nice grip area for your fingers when in those tight situations.

Contours

Deck contoursVarious contours are available. The contours are designed for added comfort and better hand control of the board.

Concave Slick

Having a concave slick will create superb speed and wall holding power. The concave forms a tube of water funneling out at the tail section. Excellent for all power riders.

Tube Stringers

Tube StringersTube stringers are used to strengthen the overall length of the board, especially if the board is made using PE core. Double stringers create an ultra stiff board; good for dropknee riders.

Spring Flex Tube Stringers

A smaller diameter tube stringer designed to allow the core to flex in critical situations. Spring Flex stringers add strength and instant recoil to the core.

Bumpers

Bumper strips are added to the construction of the board at the nose and tail to provide added protection from your leash and knee. The use of 4mm crosslink material also gives the board an excellent overall water seal.

Board Shapes

Listed here are some features of our bodyboards

Prone

Prone board shapeThe prone template generally has a wide nose & high wide point usually just below your elbow, with the rest of the template running down to the tail in a nice straight line. Tails best suited are either the bat tail, square bat or the clipped crescent tail.

Versatile

Versatile board shapeThe versatile template has a slightly lower wide point providing a usable shape for both prone & dropknee riding styles. The lower the wide point the more suitable it is for dropknee riding. Tails best suited are either the clipped crescent or the full crescent tail.

Dropknee

Dropknee board dropkneeThe dropknee template has an even gradual curve from the nose to the wide point which is usually halfway down the board. The shape has a narrower nose with a wide tail providing better control. This works really well with a full crescent tail.

Decking Options

Below are the various colours Designs has to offer

PE (non cross-linked Polyethylene)

Decking colour optionsPE (NXL) decking has been a favourite of most pro riders for many years. PE decking gives a soft positive feel with good recoil.

The colours shown for decks are also available for outside rails and tail pieces.

Rail Options

We offer to 2 different rail configurations 50/50 & 60/40.

50/50 Rails

50/50

50/50 is an equal % top rail and bottom rail, this works well in small surf as it creates less drag in the water.

50/50 Rails

60/40

60% bottom rail 40% top rail. This is a standard rail configuration for powerful waves giving you more control and better holding power.

Mesh

Mesh

Mesh close upMeshPredominately used in conjunction with PE cores. Mesh helps the core to retain stiffness and recoil. Mesh also adds weight to the board.
